Johnny Truant's Notes

Sources and Further Reading

About This Page

This page is mainly due to me realizing that what were originally personal notes are now more in the public eye, and as with any good research, I should cite my sources, and provide further reading for those curious. I believe everyone's work, including me cross referencing my notes with others, should be listed. Even if all I really did at some points was look at a wikipedia page to get a cursory understanding of something. I hope you find these sources informational, and if a particular subject catches your eye, I highly suggest you do your own research. Nothing is more rewarding than knowledge.

NOTE: THIS PART OF THE SITE IS CURRENTLY A WIP, AND IS NOT FULLY FINISHED

General

These are sources I referenced throughout my notes, or just general further reading for those curious about certain themes that might be mentioned in my notes.

Sources

List of all the referenced works in House of Leaves, a reddit post that one of my friends guided me to, which has been helpful in revealing which sources are real and which ones are fake. Huge props to this now deleted reddit user for detailing this.

Further Reading

EveryManHYBRID, a phenomenal "slenderverse" ARG that was semi inspired by House of Leaves.

Introduction

Sources

I don't think I actually have any sources for this one, as it's the introduction and I mainly just stick to the book itself.

Chapter One

Sources

A Day In The Life, By The Beatles. What it says on the tin, where the quote at the beginning of the chapter comes from.

  • Billy Meier

Billy Meier is an interesting case of how conspiracy theories might seem harmless on the surface, but can be harmful in practice. His claims of UFOs and extraterrestial beings are seemingly easy to ignore. However, when you look at his websites, you may notice other more nefarious conspiracies under the surface, such as also believing in popular antisemetic theories about how the Jewish people are responsible for tragedy, and that the Coronavirus vaccine is "more deadly than the virus" and "putting microchips" into people.

While it may seem like these are very out there, and that no one would really believe them, many people, especially those vulnerable to certain patterns of thinking, or looking to rationalize their prejudice, may get sucked into these theories. This ultimately leads to actual tragedies such as those against Jewish people or an increase in Coronavirus Outbreaks, both of which kill innocent lives.

Due to not wanting to give this man a platform, I will not be linking to his personal website, but instead articles and further readings you can look at. If you decide to look at his stuff, please keep the above in mind.

Book Review/Summary of Spaceships of the Pleiades: The Billy Meier Story, a small review and summary of a book that went in depth towards the hoaxes that Billy Meier created

billymeierufocase.com, a website created by Derek Bartholomaus, someone who became involved in the case in 2003 due to being a part of the "Independant Investigations Group", now known as the Center for Inquiry. This website is dedicated to publishing Derek Bartholomaus's research specifically into the Billy Meier's UFO Case, and his group surrounding it.

Billy Meier's Wikipedia Article, for those who just want to get the gist of this guy.

  • Marble Hornets

I briefly mention "Marble Hornets", which is an ARG hosted almost entirely on Youtube. It is heavily influential, due to being the origin of Slenderman, however, despite its popularity, with early entries having over a million views on Youtube, it is not a household name. Even those who have heard of Slenderman are not aware of the series. Due to this, I make comparisions between it and "The Navidson Record". I'm basically just using this as an excuse to talk about it, but if you are interested in getting into a series that helped shape a large portion of internet culture, here you go!

The Marble Hornets Youtube Channel, the youtube channel where the ARG was mostly hosted.

ToTheArk Youtube Channel, a supplemental youtube channel which gives further context to the series, is entirely canon.

Marble Hornets/ToTheArk in Order, a playlist compiling both "Marble Hornets" and "ToTheArk" videos in release order, highly recommended for your first watch through.

Chapter Two

Sources

Wikipedia Article On 8mm Video Format, specifically the portion which talks about the Sony Hi8 Camcorder.

"Sony Hi8 Camcorders Are Really Special", an Essay by Eric J. Kuhns on his blog, talking about why he considers them to be almost magical.

NewRepublic.com, The New Republic's website.

Redbook Magazine Covers, a listing of every single cover of Redbook going from 1903 to 2016. (Note: This site is a little laggy due to the amount of images)

Science.org's page for Volume 265, includes the contents.

Google Books Entry for Mademoiselle Volume 101, literally the only evidence I could find online of this particular volume existing.

Jstor Entry for The American Scholar, Volume 65, No. 2, not only includes the contents, but if you have access through your library, you can read it!

Chapter Three

Sources

The Wikipedia Page For The Divine Comedy, I honestly didn't go too indepth in my research here.

The Wikipedia Page For Dante's Inferno, Or here.

  • Dante's Inferno

While I personally did not do a deep dive into my research of Dante's Inferno, it is a classic, and it is alluded to quite often within House of Leaves, with good reason. It is a classic, and is a beautifully made poem that defined Hell as we know it in pop culture today. I would recommend going ahead and reading it if you are interested in any sort of Hellish imagery, or just for a crafted piece of human history. It is in the public domain, so you should have no problems getting your hands on a copy.

If you're like me however, and didn't want to take the time to read it yourself, may I recommend the video by Overly Sarcastic Productions, called "Classics Summarized: Dante's Inferno", this is largely where I got most of my information from.
